OSHA releases new resources to protect hospital workers and enhance patient safety

Yesterday, OSHA announced that it has launched a new website designed to reduce workplace injuries in healthcare by providing information about the types of injuries that commonly occur in healthcare.

The website includes a pamphlet on Worker Safety called “Worker Safety in Your Hospital – Know the Facts” that summarizes worker safety statistics in hospitals, a more detailed document titled “Facts about Hospital Worker Safety” which includes a great deal of statistical data about the number and types of injuries affecting healthcare workers; and a self assessment questionnaire to allow people to assess their own institution.

Healthcare has long been a focus of OSHA but it increased in OSHA’s priorities after the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that in 2012 healthcare had a much higher rate of non-fatal accidents than even some of industries considered hazardous such as construction and furthermore that unlike these other industries, the injury rate was increasing.
